Victoria’s Bastion Square Market

Bastion Square Market

The Bastion Square Market is a craft and artisan market in Bastion Square in downtown Victoria. It runs from Thursdays to Sundays in the summer.

Located in downtown Victoria, the market features many different vendors. Along with the awesome items you can buy there, the nearby waterfront views are top notch.

If you like shopping, artisan products, heritage buildings and supporting local artists, you’ll want to check this event out if you haven’t already!

When is the Market?

In 2023 the Bastion Square Market ran on Thursdays to Sundays from May until late September. The market may have extended its run until mid-October, weather permitting, though this was to be confirmed. On Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays the market was open from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm and on Sundays it was open from 11:00 am until 4:00 pm.

The market is interesting on all four days of the week. However, it’s usually busiest and has the most vendors on weekends.

From mid-November until Christmas Eve in 2023, there is the Bastion Square Holiday Market at the same location. It is technically different from the regular market, but still a good place to shop. During the build-up to the holiday season, the market was open on November 18th, 19th, 25th and 26th. In December it was open on the 2nd, 3rd, 9th, 10th and 16th. The final day of the holiday market is December 24th and is open from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Where is the Bastion Square Market?

The market is located in downtown Victoria at Bastion Square which is a pedestrian-only lane that’s only a couple of blocks long. The entrance at one end is across the street from the Bay Centre and beside the Irish Times Pub (at 1200 Government Street). At the other end is Wharf Street.

Bastion Square is in a pretty and historic part of town. There are lots of older buildings in the area (by BC’s relatively young standards). Both Chinatown and Market Square are also between just two and four blocks away.

In the middle of Bastion Square is the old courthouse which was built in 1889 and, until 2014, was the home to the Maritime Museum of BC (which is now located at 634 Humboldt Street near the Empress Hotel).

What to Expect at the Market

At the market you can expect to find some of the best artists and crafters on Vancouver Island selling paintings, handmade jewellery, clothing and other artsy items.

The market can get quite busy in the summer so if possible take public transit or bike down. If you drive you can park in the Bastion Square Parkade or on any of the surrounding streets.

After attending the market consider going for a waterfront walk along Wharf Street down to Victoria’s Inner Harbour. It’s a beautiful area with amazing views. Government Street is another great place for walks and window shopping.
