Ronald McDonald House & the Vancouver Island Golf Tournament
The Ronald McDonald House in British Columbia opened in 1983 in the Shaughnessy neighbourhood of Vancouver. It originally offered 13 bedrooms to sick kids and families who were in town for medical specialized care.
Over the years, the need for help has only increased. In response, Ronald McDonald Charities opened a new building near BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver. The house features 73 bedrooms which is over five times as many as the original house had!
Staying at Ronald McDonald House isn’t free, but it is incredibly affordable compared to other accommodations in Vancouver. Families that wish to make use of the house must live at least 50 kilometres away from the Lower Mainland region. In addition, everyone who stays in the house must be referred to the place by a social worker, so it’s really only for people who need the help.
Interestingly, over 20% of people who stay at Ronald McDonald House in Vancouver are from Vancouver Island. Therefore, Ronald McDonald House hosts a golf tournament on Vancouver Island each year with proceeds supporting local families that need to stay at the facilities.

2023 Golf Tournament
Despite the coronavirus pandemic and resulting provincial restrictions in the past years, golf has remained a safe sport to play. The 28th annual tournament went ahead in 2021 at the Westin Bear Mountain Golf Resort. All spots were sold out before the day of the tournament, which made the event a great success!
The 30th Ronald McDonald House Vancouver Island Golf Tournament took place on Thursday, August 10th, 2023. The event was held at Olympic View Golf Club which is located at 643 Latoria Road in Victoria. The course is a par 72 that plays about 6,600 yards from the tips. The charity event raised $210,000. The generous donations provided much needed families from BC and the Yukon with about 1,400 nights of a comfortable stay at a Ronald McDonald House.
Similar to previous Ronald McDonald House Golf Tournament in Victoria, golfers had a shotgun start to the tournament that began at about 12:00 pm. This meant groups could start their rounds on different holes but still play the full course. A barbecue, auction and an online 50/50 draw were also available in 2023.
